In the greater Seattle area, public charging was free almost every where
until about mid 2112, then the big players (Blink, Chargepoint,
Sema-Connect, etc. ) began to charge to charge. Most of the big time
companies built their networks based on a shared revenue model with their
hosts. I have always maintained the concept that it would be better to sell
the charging unit to business chains and have them provide free charging,
using that as a way to attract a regular stream of customers (my wife has a
particular casino that she likes to visit largely for this very reason). I
could see it working well for restaurants and theaters as well-any place
that you would typically be parked for more than 30 minutes or more.
Our union hall has 6 public evse's, two are Sema-Connects, and the other 4
are Blinks. The local sponsors the Sema units and charges for the Blinks.
As a result, the Sema units are used daily and the others are typically
only used for overflow situations.
