Yes, I agree completely that commercial fuses contain a lot of engineering value to best protect sensitive electronic circuits with precision.
But neither do I want a $10,000 GPS-based surveyer's transit just to set the spacing on fence posts. If the goal is to keep your batteries from going BANG! if your main conductor gets caught in the frame in an accident, then a piece of #1 wire (in a #00 system) will do the job just fine Especially if you never plan to use it -- fuses and circuit breakers rule when they're likely to be used a lot. Many commercially made production ICE vehicles use a fusible link right off the battery. That's where I got the idea!
