That's how it's done on one of the Canary Islands, El Hierro. It's the smallest, most isolated, and least populated of the group. It's very breezy and volcanic, so the climate and terrain are perfect for RE. Several years ago, they decided to stop shipping in oil to run generators. The island's governor at the time had worked in the electricity generation business, so he knew what was possible, and he had a progressive, forward looking mindset. The island now gets all its electricity from wind machines, and uses pumped storage. The old oil generators are just for backup. When I first read about this about 5 years ago, they were planning to switch to all EVs by 2020. IIRC they were offering subsidies to get folks to retire their ICEVs. I don't know whether they're on track with that. But you'd like to live in "EV paradise," now you know where to move. Warning, though, El Hierro is REALLY isolated. There isn't much to do, and there isn't a lot of work either. You'd probably need to be financially self-sufficient or retired. https://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2014/09/17/349223674/tiny-spanish- island-nears-its-goal-100-percent-renewable-energy https://v.gd/ryf1CJ David Roden - Akron, Ohio, USA EVDL Administrator = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = EVDL Information: http://www.evdl.org/help/ = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Note: mail sent to "evpost" and "etpost" addresses will not reach me.
