David addressed this rather well. To an extent. It is a societal problem that advertising targets are so easily and illogically swayed. I contend that the root cause is a low average level of education. Especially lacking in both critical thinking and physics. It was only after my college years that I became aware that the general populace had zero formal education in physics. Most know nothing of conservation of energy and energy flows. That is reflected directly in poor driving habits and poor vehicle selection.
