Hi meekerdb
In my view, this is the Chicken vs Egg paradox, my solution
to it being that life has been present even before the Big Bang
in the fiorm of (cosmic) intelligence.
The chicken-egg paradox is solved by a theorem of Kleene in
theoretical computer science. Program exists than can reproduce
itself, and be involved in more complex self-reproductive cycle.
Descartes search but did not find the solution of this problem.
Of course this need the (cosmic) "intelligence" of arithmetical
truth ...

Leibniz would say, "If there's no God, we'd have to invent him so
everything could function."

Every machine that built itself was not built by Russell.
