I think that the brain and its functions is also nothing more than part of 
what is shown to us, but its not so much a decision, it is more like an 
interference pattern. The neurological evidence shows correlation, not 
causation. Anything that 'the brain perceives' could be perceived by 
microphenomenal experiences rather than microphysical computations. It's 
profoundly anthropocentric to assume that the brain is a machine that 
performs a function for us. The community of living cells that is the brain 
makes its own sense on its own level. We use the brain, and it is us, but 
it is our experience, we are not its experience. I agree that the personal 
level of our awareness is indeed filtered, but not mechanically. It's not a 
process. There is a level on which it is a mechanical process, but that is 
not the level on which we exist personally. When we conflate the 
sub-personal and personal layers, we lose the relativity of simultaneity 
and scale of the 'now'. That leads us to the erroneous conclusion that 
personal awareness must be a product of a microphysical mechanism. 

Once we take perceptual relativity seriously, there is no reason to impose 
sub-personal time scales on what is, for the personal window of perception, 
an instantaneous gestalt. We see out of our eyes - directly and personally. 
We don't see everything that there is to see, but nothing does. Our 
awareness is every bit as direct and immediate as the perception of neurons 
or molecules, its just a different gauge of 'immediate'. Remember, on the 
level at which our immediate is not immediate (sub-personal levels are 
measured in microseconds), we do not exist...at all. We are not present in 
that band of description. What goes on there does not relate to us 
directly, it is only a symptom of a lot of experiences which overlap with 
out own.
