The interesting part comes after step 3, but this step is necessary to set
up the argument. The more trivial the assertions on the set up, the
stronger the argument. You are obviously a highly educated physicist, so
you are surely aware of that.

By the way, what is the difference between pompous formalism and plain
formalism?
