The goal of science is not to determine who is the smartest scientist,
nor is it to enable the creation of new gadgets -- it just so happens
that these are common side effects. The goal of science is to describe
reality, and consciousness is simultaneously the most undeniable and
baffling aspect of reality. Intelligence is not even a well-defined
problem (and I say this as someone who does research in AI). What is
your definition of intelligence?
