I wasn't looking for anyone to fix or troubleshoot for me. I was SIMPLY
looking for knowledgeable sys admins who might know what is going on or
a good place to start..... Anyway, I have ALL the counters running ALL
day on 2 server and the RPC Latency is averaging 5ms on one server and
the server is question is running at 60ms+.....

Aaron,

I am trying to help YOU learn how to troubleshoot this problem. From
your posts, it seems you are expecting me (and the others here) to do
all the troubleshooting.

The entire reason that I posted the link that I did is because it will
help YOU determine where the bottleneck is. There are probably 20 some
counters (or more) that need to be looked at. Simply posting your RPC
Operations/sec and RPC Averaged Latency does nothing to help us see
where the problem might be because I don't know if you have even looked
at the other counters or not.

Let me describe what should be happening here.

You: I've looked at all the perfmon counters in that document. RPC
Operations/sec are pretty high, and (specific) disk counters are high as
well. That seems like it might point to a disk bottleneck. I'm also
seeing X events in the Application and System logs. Does that sound
right?

Instead of:

You: Here's the results of a few counters - please interpret them and
tell me what is wrong.

That's a bit overstated, I know, but I think you get the picture. I
don't want to tell you what's wrong with your server. I want to help
you learn how to figure out what is wrong with your server yourself.

With all that being said, no, the info you provided is not nearly enough
to figure out what is going on. If I can be a little more explicit this
time, you need to go through that document and check each of the
performance counters that are listed to see where your problem lies. It
would appear that your problem lies somewhere on the server itself (not
client or network), but if you don't provide the info, we can't help.

We are in Exchange 2000 native mode w/ 2 backend servers and 1 frontend
server. The server that seems to be causing the problem is as follows:

The server is a Master for Organization.
Dual 1Ghz CPU
3.5GB Ram
RAID Controller 1 has the following:
RAID 1 for OS (Page file is located here also) RAID 1 for Logs RAID
Controller 2 has the following:
RAID 5 for Exchange Store
2 100MB NICs that are Teamed and set to 100 FULL Duplex It has 1 Storage
group w/ 5 stores Store 1 = 19GB Store 2 = 13.6GB Store 3 = 13.7GB Store
4 = 3GB Store 5 = 1GB

We are also seeing RPC Averaged Latency of around 50-100.
I hope this is enough info!

Thanks
Aaron

Without knowing more about your environment, it is hard to tell. Also,
just having the results from only one perfmon counter (rpc ops/sec)
isn't going to say what the problem is.

Can you provide more details about your system configuration? CPU's,
Memory, Hard drives, RAID levels, plus the results of the other
counters. For example, you say that the rpc operations/sec is high.
What does your RPC requests look like? What do your disk reads and
writes/sec look like? What do your memory counters look like?
(memory\pages/sec, page reads/sec, page writes/sec).

The document should help you figure out where the bottleneck is. It
sounds like it is a bottleneck on the server, so now you need to figure
out what the bottleneck is (cpu, disk, memory, etc)

Thanks. It appears that RPC Operations /sec are high. They are around
averaging over 100 on the MASTER server. The average response time on
the 2nd server is below 40 almost ALL the time. What do you think might
be the problem?

This is a great resource for nailing down where the problem most likely
is.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2000/support/troup
erf.mspx

Basically, what it boils down to is you have 3 areas where you could be
having problems. Client, Network, and Server. This doc helps you
figure out which one through a series of perfmon counters.

Subject: Requesting Data from Server

We are constantly getting "Requesting Data from Microsoft Exchange
Server". Does anyone know how to fix this problem or at least how to
troubleshoot it?

If I check the connection status from within Outlook 2003 when I get the
message, I see really slow average response times from the Exchange
server. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 150-500 however, when things
are working normally the times are less than 40!

DOMAIN
* Single windows 2000 domain
* 3 domain controllers that are all acting as GC servers
* 1,500 accounts

EXHCNAGE SERVERS
* Windows 2000 Sp4 w/ all the latest patches
* 2 Exchange server 2000 w/ Post Sp3 (Version 6487)
* Each Exchange server is dual PIII 900 w/ 3.5 GB of memory
* NICs are hard coded to 100 FULL DUPLEX and we are using Compaq Load
Balancing option

*Our clients are all using Outlook 2000, XP and 2003

Thanks in advance for any help!

Aaron
