Absolutely. And, there's only one E5.5 server per site. All Exchange servers
get incoming mail and send outgoing mail only through the smart host (well,
except for users on the same server sending to each other).

Yes, it does. In fact, all the various internal domains that receive email
have their IP addresses in DNS pointing to the smart host (MTA). It's a tad
complicated, but then, what isn't in our profession? 

I actually have a test Exchange 5.5 server on Windows 2000 Server in its own
site. For my own piece of mind, rather than breaking a production server,
maybe I can create another ADC, connect it to that test Exchange server
(oops, I might have to install a test E2K3 server into that site, too), and
test getting rid of the IMS on that Exchange server, and see if everything
still works. I would hope that after all that, I could get rid of that site
if I wanted to?
