Ah, I had no idea on the "preparexx" command, thanks!

OK weird, looking at the change log (thank you Netwrix!)  it was the
Discovery Search Mailbox I disabled,  which looking back doesn't match the
error message yet somehow that is exactly what let me apply SP3 to the
mailbox servers.
