Hi there

There are some drawbacks to clusters:

1) They are more difficult to administer
2) Memory fragmentation
3) Extra steps when setting up a front end/ back end configuration
4) Cannot support SRS
5) MS now only recommends Active/ Passive (Some PSS techs have gone as
far as saying Active/ Active is no longer supported)
6) The dreaded -1018 error - no protection there
7) There are times when a rollover fails - then it rolls back to the
original node. That does take as long as a regular reboot

The positive side to clustering:

1) Rolling the server is quicker than rebooting a server
2) It looks good on your resume

Believe me, I have a cluster. For the money we spent on it, we could
have gotten a regular server that would rock. I also have a standard
server with Exchange 2K - and so far, the thing has been rock solid. I
can show you What's up logs for the past six months showing 99.98%
uptime.

Best wishes

Russell

PS - Friends don't let friends cluster exchange

Subject: Looking for anti-clustering arguments

OK, I know the majority of this list is against clustering Exchange. But
does anyone have some sound reasoning behind this argument that could be
used to convince someone at the executive level? I don't think many
executives are too compassionate for the "it's harder to administer"
argument. And I need more ammo than just saying that clusters won't
protect you from database corruption anyway.

Thanks

Jason
