I think I may have fixed my occurrences of a similar issue. I had an Dell RAC3 which didn't have drivers so was disabled. When the drivers were loaded it defaulted to a 192.162.x.x address. SMTP vs was set to use 'all assigned'. I have explicitly set it to one ip address.
I'm not sure if this was the cause but I'm hoping it was for me.
