Try 'info hdparm'. If you can enable dma using '-d1' (among
other parameters), then you could add a hdparm line to rc.local.
Mine looks like this for a WD 8.4g:
hdparm -m8 -c1 -u1 -d1 -k1 -a128 /dev/hdb
