Ummm, second John's opinion  Never knew Windows was so tolerant of sloppy
hardware

And the fact that you know someone with the same board sans your problems wraps
it up.

They may have had the modem chipset on board as a multi-piece option and simply
misassembled or had one of the modem-type chipsets still in the hopper when they
changed the line to non-modem.  Stranger things have happened, like the folks who
loaded up worthless pieces of plastic in the cache hoppers "So their production
line would continue at the same speed".    Surprised that it is ASUS, but if
quality control were perfect, it would be too expensive.
