Yes, I have suggestions

FIRST

post the output of

dmesg

SECOND

go into your BIOS and look at the drives.  Tell me what the first
through last columns in the table for primary master and primary
slave say, then for secondary master and slave.


then let's see what 

cat /etc/lilo.conf 

produces.

If all that matches up, you most probably do have a hosed boot
sector.  To double check that, try installing mdk with the drive
as /dev/hdc  (this works under 7.0 and 7.1 quite nicely)--then we
can tell for sure--ALSO hit f1 at the beginning of the install
and step through text expert and read error messages if any.
