Well, I hope I can beg your indulgence--is it possible to test
with Maxtor alone--as drive /dev/hda ? If you have room for a
minimal install, this should point something.

Someone with a similar lspcidrake output is running OK with a
CDRW and 7.1 .... If this doesn't work with the Maxtor,,, We
may need a couple of dual-trace 'scopes, or just decide to
operate the hardware where it will work.

I have a couple of comps that are limited to 7.0 and have to do
that on an 83MHz bus instead of 100--Both by PCChips (M748MR)
Actually they are not "mine" but the owners look to me for
(local) support.

I am starting a test of fairly new and inexpensive hardware with
7.1 and I will be reporting results back to the list shortly.

Thanks so much for your patience. I won't ask for any tests
beyond this. With a VIA MVP4, An SiS530, and a VIA MVP3, I was
able to make a Creative 4224 CDRW work under 7.1 without any
special effort. (I like the Creative 4224 BTW.) K6-2s all with
speeds of 300-500 and FSBs of 95-100. (Yes, one MVP4 was highly
unstable at 100 and fine at 95, and switching memory didn't
change a thing.)

This next one I am testing is a new concept--run the processor
and bus at optimal speed, whatever that means. Anyway, I have to
use BIOS to set the speeds if I want to override--no hardware
jumpers.

I wish Mandrakesoft had the resources to know how much the code
is narrowing the tolerance for running slightly off-spec. About
.2% of the hardware running 6.1 could not handle 7.0 driven at
the same speeds(my own survey) and it may be happening again.
