Jeff,
For what it's worth, 56K modems will connect at a lower speed than 33.6K 
modems if there is an incompatibility (as there usually is) in the ISP's 
modem bank. It seems that ALL of the ISP's in this area have modem banks that 
will revert to the V.34 spec's if they are unable to establish a good connect 
with V.90. I suspect that this is your problem. I have been scrounging 33.6 
hardware modems anywhere I can find them because both my Linux and Winderz 
boxes connect faster and more reliably when using them.
