    Well, every Kppp version I've ever used since Mdk 6.0, clk on the 
docked modem lights on the panel and a details/disconnect dialog box 
pops up that also shows the connection speed. Also you can check the 
'show log' box on Kppp and the debug window will show the connect speed 
briefly before it diappears.
    Sort'a, that's the connection handshake speed with the ISP.  True 
connection speeds are what you can download at, from the site you're 
downloading from.  A decent sustained rate for 28,8 is 3.3K/sec, for 
31,2 - 3.6K/sec ....if you don't have too many stalls.  If you really 
want to monitor the connection speed, click on the panel lights (as 
above) and choose 'details'  You'll see a running avg and a graph of 
the connection.  
   Also many download butlers (my favorite is nt-1.19-1mdk.i586.rpm,
it's in /contrib/) show the download rate/avg/and time over multiple 
downloads. NT shows this and a graph, plus it's the simplest damn best 
workin downloader i've ever used. Supports retries and resumes. 'Bout 
the only configuration it needs is to tell it what dir you want the 
dl'd files put in ;)
