This will be my last request for help in installing my modem in Mandrake
8.0. I hope no one perceives this as a threat, because it isn't intended
to be. It's just that I've been so frustrated in the last few weeks. For
instance, when I install the drivers for the sound card, it works the
first time, and then it doesn't work any more. The same with my cable
modem. It did work once, but then I had a problem and I had to re-install
M8.0, and it hasn't worked since. I suppose I can do without the sound
card, but I can't do without the modem. So if anyone can help me, I'd
appreciate it. If no one replies, then I'll have no choice but to take
Linux off my computer. And I like it very much.

Now, here seems to be the problem with my modem. When I typed 'draknet'
at a command prompt, here's what I got:

 Changing to default
 modprobe: can't locate module serial
Please wait while probing serial port...
Then it went into the configuration menu and it said:
 IP address: 24.102.7.207
 Netmask: 255.255.254.0
Automatic IP (and I checked the button that says [bootp/dhcp]
 pr1.on.wave.home.com (my hostname)
 Everything already installed
 Setting network parameters OK
 Bringing up Interface lo
 Bringing up Interface eth0
 Determining IP information for eth0
 failed
 [FAILED]
 Everything already installed
 Then back to root.

This seems to tell me that Mandrake isn't seeing my NIC (or so I think).
Can anyone tell me what the problem MIGHT be?

Guy
