Dave,
I reckon ones just wants to maximize the area used under the HP curve in each gear. With unequal gear spacing, it might well be that the optimum shift point will be different at each change.

Also, there may be some giving up a little in the present gear by passing the HP peak so one doesn't lose as much in the next gear. There is probably some good info on the drag race sites :-> .

As to top end: The equation I used is valid. The drag at steady state is only overcome by force in pounds (not HP) at the tire patch.

Increasing torque will make you go faster. Increasing HP will too, but only as long as you end up with more torque at the contact patch. Gearing multiplies torque, remember. It isn't clear to me that gearing for the torque peak togain top end is better or worse.

I understand that some F500 racers have experimeted with a falling shift curve so they are at the torque peak for the top end. I don't know how well that has worked for them.

Others, back in F440 Kaw days, used to have a rising shift curve because their pipes got hotter near the end of long straights and tuned to a higher RPM.

With the relatively low HP of a Kaw, I also suppose that pipe temp is a bigger factor in tuning than with with a much higher HP motor into a single pipe.

Finally, with the changing efficiency of a CVT, it may be hard to distinguish where improvements in top end come from. Clutch efficiency or chosing torque vs HP?

Stream or even electric motors have their advantages. Easy to muffle.

Chuck,
In general you would be shifting after the rpm that hp peaked at.
I'd suspect the ideal rpm would depend on shape of power curve
and trans ratios. My thinking would be to get the rpm that had the
highest average hp for the rpm range used in that particular gear.
Of course with the cvt......

So I take it your going to scrap plans for that steam powered
sports racer.
