Chris,
I see what you mean. Probably true especially in the case of wings and diffusers. Many FF guys going to FC with wings had trouble learning how to adjust the wings.

However, there are ways to control costs and make understanding tuning easier. Lists like this are a big help.

Suspension tuning already is already different on a F500 from a Kart. We rarely play with front wheel offset and caster. We can adjust roll couple distribution by changing the motion ratio of the rubber puck vs. the suspension.

In the case of REAL shocks and springs, I actually think that most people would be happier and understand how to tune almost immediately.

If the coil-overs are on bellcranks with adjustable ratios, then tuning for balance is the same as it is now in F500, move or slide the rod end to a different hole or position.

Controlled cost identical shocks were killed in the past because it was theorized that they wouldn't fit every current chassis the same way. That really wasn't valid. a NEW RUBBER SUSPENSION RUBBER COMPOUND WOULD REQUIRE THE SAME OR MORE DEVELOPMENT ON THE CURRENT CARS. Oops, not yelling, just hit the cap key by mistake.

Sway bars are not really necessary to the look nor function of a formula car. So those could be left off. The newest DSR's don't have any.

Finally, the average street rat these days knows a lot more about springs and shocks than I did in 1966 when I started driving. The magazines are full of technical articles (as well as pretty girls).

Making F500 Karter friendly is something that probably could be only be accommodated to a certain point; it has to be current racer friendly as well as friendly to other possible buyers such as the hot hatch street set.

Chuck all those shocks and wings and sway bars is what scares all the first timers away from road racing, too complicated, I need an engineer with me to go racing. The point of having a class that is supose to be karter friendly, is that the setup would make sense and not be overly complicated.

  Jay,
While a 6 speed might mean something to some people, F500 ought to look
carefully at more than that.

In my experience, most people, once they see the solid rear end and lack of
coils springs and lack of true shocks just shake their heads and walk away.

They think: "big, evil handling go-kart that will hurt my back".

I reckon that most of the Solo and road racing population with true shocks
has been totally spoiled by the magic that those devices perform.

Just as a 6 speed may not be any faster than a CVT,
it doesn't matter a bit to them if you are quick with rubber pucks

It is a perception thing too.

>From my own standpoint, I wouldn't leave the class if these cars had coils
overs, IRS, and wings;
the powerplant woudn't matter as much as long as it fed a CVT.
I'd still prefer a CVT very much because the faster you go in Solo the less
you care to take even a finger off of the steering wheel.
