Ken,

Did you loose the coolant through an external leak ?  Not through a leak in
the head gasket ?

Coolant in the combustion chamber can do some very strange things.

With EGT that low, one would not expect damage to a piston, but as been
said, probe location can make a difference. Plus, when was the last time you
calibrated your EGT gages ?
