I have not had to deal with the situation that you have, but my old Red
Devil came close. Any vertical movement of the rear wheel caused the whole
frame to move. Drove it one year that way, then changed it to 4-link
suspension.

Having said that, I don't think that the understeer is being caused by the
rear suspension system.  Understeer is caused, in most cases, by having too
much stiffness in the front. What is happening is that as you start to turn,
a lot of force is being placed on the outside front wheel, and the force
exceeds the grip.  The back wheels are just along for the ride.

You need to soften up the front suspension so more work is done by the rear
wheels.

  Then get a plan to change the rear to four link. This is not an impossible
task to do your self if you have some hand tool and welding experience.
Look at some of the newer cars, and steal their layout.

Some of the problem maybe driving style.  I'll let the auto-x guys jump in
on that.
