Philip, I have not had to deal with the situation that you have, but my old Red Devil came close. Any vertical movement of the rear wheel caused the whole frame to move. Drove it one year that way, then changed it to 4-link suspension.
Having said that, I don't think that the understeer is being caused by the rear suspension system. Understeer is caused, in most cases, by having too much stiffness in the front. What is happening is that as you start to turn, a lot of force is being placed on the outside front wheel, and the force exceeds the grip. The back wheels are just along for the ride. You need to soften up the front suspension so more work is done by the rear wheels. Then get a plan to change the rear to four link. This is not an impossible task to do your self if you have some hand tool and welding experience. Look at some of the newer cars, and steal their layout. Some of the problem maybe driving style. I'll let the auto-x guys jump in on that.
