My .02 is that the surface was "acceptable". Yes, it was fun. I was worried that the lack of grip would make it no fun but that wasn't the case. It certainly wasn't the grip we're used to on concrete, and it was absolutely necessary to stay on the available line. If you strayed off line just a little, the sand that came out of the surface would kill you. There was some "milling" done to the surface in some strategic spots that helped the grip....I'm not sure if the course designers took advantage of those spots or if the SCCA had the milling done after the courses were designed, but it did make the grip better in those spots. The other interesting thing about the surface was the relatively steep slope, particularly on the West course. While the surface was smooth, the slope made most of the turns off camber. To anyone who stayed away for fear of a poor racing surface....come back next year. Of course, had it rained I may be singing a different song. All in all, it was a very well run event. Congrats to the SCCA for working out all the hassles of holding the event at a new site and doing so professionally. -Jeff B.

For those who ran Topeka . . . was the Solo surface as bad as others had previously anticipated on this list? Did it take away from your fun? Or does the fun of competing on equal terms and winning make up for it?
