Racing Rubber is one of the most amazing compounds that man has ever
manufactured.

When cold race rubber seems to be slicker than driving on glare ice. Once
the tires warm into the normal operating temperature range they stick like
chewing gum to the sole of ones shoe. The difference is night and day. One
of the comments in this conversation about tires at the Solo Nationals that
has been glossed over and lost is the comment about having more than one
driver in the car......more than one driver = more runs and less cool off
time between runs = more grip in the tires.

Competitive tire life is not gauged by the physical wear left to the bottom
of the wear marker....it is measured in number of heat cycles that have been
applied to the tire. Each heat cycle has the effect of curing the tire and
making it harder and harder as each heat cycle is added to those that have
gone before.

Subject: [F500] ? re. Tires

I've never used slick tires before and I'm wondering about this now with all
the tire talk going on in another thread.

The slicks on my car appear to have plenty of wear left in them if the dots
or dimples on the tire face are any indication. When I poke my thumb nail in
them the surface feels quite soft and malleable. Compared to the feel of the
high performance tires on my street car, these tires should offer much
better performance. But, I don't think I am getting the performance that I
"theoretically" should get. The main reason I think this is that under
braking, these tires are awful! They lock up with almost no effort and it is
next to impossible to get anything other than complete lockup. I don't find
it really difficult to get the car to push, and oversteer is a constant
problem. Needless to say, this is not an ideal condition. What gives here?

Are these tires worn out?

Why do they look and feel so good (to the touch) and work so poorly compared
to my high performance street tires?
