Are you getting those wimpy measurements by measuring at the bare hub surface? You need to measure at the outside of the wheel/tire assembly while mounted on the car.
I got those wimpy measurements going from the outside of one tire to the outside of the other. It has been suggested that I can improve overall grip by widening the car. I think I can get to 50 on the front with a spacer and I've got some room to move the back wheels out, but I'll probably need to get a longer axle to get the rears out past 50 inches.
