There are a few who differ in this opinion. Although not designed to do so,
it does limit the amount the helmet can be depressed. A few open wheelers
have complemented their HANS on stopping compression in a roll over. The
other good thing to do is ensuring you are low enough below the roll
hoop...seems to be missing for a few people. Didn't take much to raise the
hoop on my car four inches. I like my eggs not scrambled.

Remember what a hans
device is made to do.. It only helps prevent basilar skull fractures. The
weight of the helment acts like a fulcrum when the shoulders are tired down.
Also remember that we are in open wheel cars The hans device does nothing for
axial loading (getting hit on top of the head) Which will cause a brust
fracture or cord compression. In karting more neck collar type devices are
used to prevent axial loading so look at your car would you more likely go
head first into a solid barrier or flip and have something you on top of the
head. Remember the hans is a very good device for high speed front impact
crashes but it does not help in axial loading..Rory

I'm thinking of doing
the apexspeed group buy, but a HANS is still a bunch of
money. How many of
you are using a HANS device now? Do you think it will
become manditory? At
the speeds F500s travel are neck injuries/ neck pain
common in a crash.
