Bruce, I also think that the 440 would be a good choice, BUT from what I have learned about the 440 and the snowmobile racing is that because the competition is so ferocious, that the major builders change the engine every year, trying to get the competitive edge. This would not be good for us because we then would have to have the "engine of the year" every year in order to keep up.
And if we would just pick one, say the engine that Arctic Cat used in 2004, I suspect that finding an engine would be difficult as I don't think the make many of those engines. Most if not all are use by the race teams and are throwaways at the end of the year. Your Jon Doe snowmobiler does not buy a 440, he wants a macho 800 triple..
