Chris, not really ture.
Aircraft designs are indeed done in CAD, simulated with CFD and then scale
models as well as flight tests are used to evolve the design. Sometimes the
CFD leads to designs that don't work out..
I reckon that aircraft are actually quite staight forward and easier to
design than race cars operatring in a combo of free air, rotating tires,
open cockpits, and ground effects.
Dave, the James's used linear pots to measured suspension deflection with a
data recorder. A long process of cut and try, cut and try at the track.

Chuck, I know that they can and do design entire aircraft without using
wind tunnels, I'm sure that with the software out now, they can design and
test race car bodies.
