One other thing to try.  Lean out the pilot jet.  It could be too rich
and dumping fuel in the crank if the plugs are wet.

Jim,

I don't recall the plugs being wet-wet when I removed
them to do the compression test. I don't recall a
strong gasoline smell, either. I'm hoping that an idle
speed adjustment will solve it.
