I'm an autocrosser so I use the steering wheel a lot. Like you I had some intrepidation about switching but I did and I have to say the flat steering wheel with open top is easier to steer with. I can position my hand on a lower corner and push the wheel if I need to. I have reached for the wheel and not found it intuitively, even on the first day I used my new wheel. Go for it.
