I have a 4wd F-150 and I never use 4wd mode for towing but I could. Just never needed it. From a resale value standpoint 4 wd is money in the bank. And good trucks have reliable 4wd systems that you shouldn't have to worry about. I imagine they all have electronic 4wd these days .. they should.
