I would have to agree, 4x4 can be a very handy thing.

Especially if you are looking at a dually. A Dually without a locked
diff can easily get stuck in wet grass. They SUCK... I know from
experience. A locker rear with a dually is much better. 4x4 dually
will go anywhere you might even think of dragging your trailer.

The problem with a dually is that you get more floatation with the 4
rear tires. Not necessarily more traction. I would say that with a
dually, 4x4 is more important than with a non-dually. I'm on my 3rd
dually now, and love 'em. If you are looking at a GM, definitely go
with the Duramax if you have the coin. It's more to buy, but you will
keep it on the resale.

My Duramax never even broke a sweat going through the 5% & 6% grade
hills in SE Tennessee pulling 13,000-14,000 lbs at 80-85 MPH, and still
saw about 12MPG.

Subject: RE: [F500] tow vehicle question

Herb,
We have a locked rear and have felt the need for 4WD on several
occasions.

Such as the time our rig sunk in the artesian wells of Grattan. Or when
we spent an hour trying to back into a wet hill of a paddock space at
Mid Ohio. Or fighting the snow on our way down to Sebring or up to
Gingerman.

I could go on, but my next truck will definitely by 4WD.

Subject: [F500] tow vehicle question

I'm looking at buying a new pickup for towing my racing trailer. The
deals being offered make buying a truck from dealer stock instead of
ordering very appealing. So all the local dealers only stock 4 wheel
drive pickups.

I've never considered towing with a 4 wheel drive. Are there any
significant advantages or disadvantages to consider? Thanks Herb Noble
