Chuck,
If, or (when) I get around to converting my 88 Red Devil to 4 link, is
it mandatory to relocate the countershaft from rear of engine to in
front of the engine, like your old car is now? And if it is mandatory,
why so? Inquiring minds......

First question - What is the distance between your Jackshaft and Final
Drive gear. On my 86 Red Devil, in it's original configuration the
drive
and driven belt gears were almost as close together as was physically
possible. With this near mounting of the gears, the belt had no more
than 3
or 4 teeth of engagement on the drive gear...in racing this was no
problem,
unless I spun and then tried to stand on the throttle while still
rolling
backwards. For 2 seconds it sounded like a Ferrari at full song, as the
teeth were ripped off the belt. The same Ferrari sound would occur at
an
Auto-X, for the same reason....trying to pass too much power through too
few
teeth of engagement.

Once the car was converted to a trailing arm, 4 link rear suspension and
the
drive gear and the driven gear were separated by about 22 inches (which
required a longer belt, just slightly less than 1/2 of the drive gear
was
captured by the belt and thus had 15/18 teeth of engagement and I never
had
another drive belt problem under any circumstance.

Your mileage may vary

Subject: [F500] Autox and belts

Hi all-

I took the Red Devil to its first autox yesterday, and ran into a little
snag: I broke the drive belt (is that what we call the one that isn't
part
of the CVT?) on my second run. It broke somewhere near the start... I'd
guess on a rational level that it broke on the launch, but I swear I had
power for at least the 1st 20 feet, and I did get up enough speed to
coast
well off the course.

Anyway, I have a spare belt, so I can replace that, but I'm wondering if
there is any autox specific trick that should be employed to keep this
from
happening again. Different tension? Driver adjustments?

Thanks for the tips,

-Chris
