Chris,

I replied to you on the eformulacarnews forum but just to rehash it here, I
use a "racing" type belt for my solo car like you. It is 36mm wide. Never
had a breakage problem in the 11 years it has been on the car. It has gone
through many, many autox starts without a problem. Perhaps your belt had
damage that you didn't see. Perhaps a pebble got caught up in the belt and
caused the failure. There could be many explanations beyond the width of the
belt causing a problem.

Did you get a "ratcheting" of the belt when you left the line? If you did,
then your belt needed adjustment and that's why it broke. Was it aligned
properly? Did a foreign body get caught up in the belt? All questions that
could lead to an answer on the failure. I wouldn't be so quick to go with a
wider belt until I put a new 36mm belt back on, adjusted it right, and made
sure that everything else was correct.

Just my 0.02 :-).

Subject: [F500] Autox and belts

Hi all-

I took the Red Devil to its first autox yesterday, and ran into a little
snag: I broke the drive belt (is that what we call the one that isn't part
of the CVT?) on my second run. It broke somewhere near the start... I'd
guess on a rational level that it broke on the launch, but I swear I had
power for at least the 1st 20 feet, and I did get up enough speed to coast
well off the course.

Anyway, I have a spare belt, so I can replace that, but I'm wondering if
there is any autox specific trick that should be employed to keep this from
happening again. Different tension? Driver adjustments?

Thanks for the tips,

-Chris
