The others have asked good questions so far. 
My old Red Devil is a "center drive" and has a very short 
center to center distance between the jackshaft and rear 
axle.I run gearing in the 25/120 range and don't get much belt wrap 
on the front driver. I made up a roller to keep the belt from 
slipping on the driver. I run it with light contact to the back 
of the belt. 
The photo is of the assm just sitting in position, no belt tension 
etc.

This may give you some ideas. 
I've not had any problems running a belt once the initial "tracking" 
and tension is set.
