Well, I'm a guy, and I reeeally wonder, too.

I think you are correct about the tendency towards
fanaticism in spirituality occuring more in men than
in women.  It definitely *does* happen in women, but
in my experience to a lesser extent.

Maybe it's team sports.  Guys grow up being told that
being a good member of the team and supporting the
team captain is the most important thing in life.  So
when they get into the world of business, or the world
of spirituality, guys sometimes do the weirdest things
to "support the captain."
