It seems there may be a distinction i) between being celibate while channels are opening up and sanskaras are being dissovled, ii) the state where energy is ever flowing upward, all channels are open, and all sanskaras are dissolved. I have no doubt that MMY was celibate during his internship with SBS, and probably for some good time after that. Maybe his whole life. However, who on this list knows the practices and activities that may be available to an urdhvareta? (Vaj, and others, may have some stories from traditions -- and if he can share that would be useful). But generally such knowledge is not widespread. Consequently, there is no distinction between practices relevant to life on the path and and practices relevant to life at the "goal" (aka pinnacle of human achievement). Some old timer once told a first hand story about MMY -- a few traveling with him, at an airport resaturant, waiting for their plane. He had a salad in front of him, and began to play with the salt shaker. He said that GD had forbidden him to eat salt the whole time he was in the ashram. MMY said he never did eat salt during that period. "But want to see me eat salt now?" he asked. He proceeded to unscrew the cap of the shaker and pour the whole bottle of salt on his salad. pour. And then he ate it. With glee. I always saw this as both an amusing yogi story, but also an analogy that distinguishes the path from the goal for a yogi. Upon hearing it, I took it as a tale about celibacy -- but that was my take. I am not supporting any particular history or POV. I am not making a case that MMY had sex, did not have sex, is at the "goal", is not at the goal, etc. My life and worldview is not dependent on any of that. I am simply asking if it is possible that adepts and yogis who have a particular level of attainment (not even necessarily "at the goal"): i) can engage in sex without the energy flowing downward (or at least not affecting the upward flow after the act) ii) may find something useful, from an energy flow, transformation, practice POV, from sex? Some practice / benefit that is not available to downward flowing non-adepts? And the knowledge of such benefical aspects of sex are generally not known by downward flowers? , not only must you be a strict celibate > throughout your life, > What high state of consciousness must a Master be in to be able to > impart such a metamorphosis upon someone with merely a glance? > > A wise man once told me that people of high consciousness can > recognize and understand those of lower consciousness.
