My son was very young when one of his pets died. VERY young. He wanted his pet to come back and I informed him that we couldn't do that because all living things eventually die. He cried "But NOT us!" I gave him a hug and explained, "even us, but not for a really, really, REALLY long time..." He calmed down after a while.
