"So called" is the key word here Sal. George Will seems to be one of those people that were taught in school that the War Between the States was fought to free the slaves. It wasn't . Freeing the slaves was a by product  of the war. The war was fought to preserve the Union and according to Lincoln, at the beginning, it didn't matter to him whether it was with or without slavery. The idea that Will proposed  that an anti war movement might have been able to stop the war and leave 2 countries , one with slavery today is not accurate or realistic. George Will is a political commentator not a historian. Had the Southern states successfully seceded, chances are  there would have been negotiations to rejoin the union at some later date especially after Europe applied economic pressure to do away with slavery. Slavery was on it's way out as an institution at that time and European refusal to buy southern cotton picked by slaves would have brought the South to its knees and negotiations.
