I watched it happen during the period immediately after 9/11, and I've been watching it the last few days, on this group and on many other forums. There's a certain kind of person who really gets *into* the disaster thing, feeds on it, and can't tear him- or herself away from the television. They watch all the news, compulsively. And the anger and the frustration that they feel as they watch just builds and builds and builds in them until they feel that they have to DO something.
So what do they DO? Do they turn off the fuckin' TV and get outside and get some air and thank the lords of karma that it isn't them who is going through all of this? No. Do they sit down and meditate and try to connect back with the part of themselves that isn't so angry and frus- trated and wanting to lash out? No. What they do is log onto the Internet and lash out at anyone they possibly can. Anyone and anything is fair game. Arguments start over the smallest, silliest shit, and turn nasty really quickly. These people don't care who they're arguing with or about what. They don't care who they're insulting or putting down, they don't care who they hurt. The whole *point* is to hurt someone, *anyone*, to try to make someone else feel as bad as they do. The people who do this can't be dealt with, and they can't be reasoned with. They're too far gone. You can't be compassionate and try to gently remind them that they should turn off the fuckin' TV and get off their fat asses and go get some air or meditate or do whatever they should do to get human again. They'll only turn on you and try again to make you feel as bad as they do. It's like trying to deal with a junkie. It's not just here. It's everywhere on the Net. It's on every forum. And more and more, on more and more forums, people who remember what happened after 9/11 are posting stuff like this and trying to remind the still sane members of the forum that when you encounter people who are this far gone into the TV/Anger/Hurt cycle the only thing you can do is not interact with them at all. ------------------------ Yahoo!
