The Microsoft Surface is a real x86 computer desktop
replacement, in the form of an ultra book. Solid state
HD and Intel i5 CPU and a 64 bit OS.

You can't run Adobe CS or a fast multimedia creation
suite on a smart phone or on a netbook - too slow.

You'll need Windows 8 Pro for serious work with
spreadsheets and databases too. An ARM CPU just
won't cut it, speed wise.

You need a real computer to do that, with lots of
DRAM and a USB 3 port. The Surface makes the Apple
iPad or an Android internet tablet look like and act
like toys.

The Surface is not internet dependent.
