Food Deserts are definitely a serious problem in this country. We are very
spoiled here in Oregon where the expansion of the local chain markets and
independents who are offering good food are going into those areas that are
left untouched by the Kroegers, the Safeways, the Vons, the Albersons, the
Pigly Wiggly, etc. They also carry mixed items such as Organic and Non
Organic.

Because of gentrification these stores are doing well because as affordable
housing disappears these fringe areas that use to be food deserts become
desirable by those who also want the benefits of well to do neighborhoods. The
existing residence who are not displaced find employment, community involvement
by the store, and, most importantly, a food source that does not involve a
drive thru menu and a toy.

I hope this trend continues I don't want to see happen in Portland Oregon what
happen to San Francisco, my home town that I could no longer afford to live in.
