Way back when, in Beacon Light of the Himalayas Maharishi said you can choose any word at all to transcend on. That being the case, any word at all, such as with Benson's technique, will allow you to transcend. In BL of the H Maharishi then goes on to say that we choose the names of Hindu gods for their pleasing influence. But this does not negate what he said immediately prior to that (which I said immediately prior to that in this post).
