Ok Thanks for the clarification. When I visited Oslo, the point was
made about the king to me. I was not sure how "real" it was.

I agree humor and satire can, in appropriate circumstances, be good
discussion starters. And help people see more sides of an issue. But
not always in all circumstances. Its not always effective. There is a
time and place for humor. 

In my view, the editors of the magazine that published the cartoons
are imbeciles with no cultural sensitivity. Its "free speech" just as
yelling fire in a theatre is, or yelling "niggers" to a crowd
assembled to protest a beating of a black by a police officer. Not all
free speech is protected in the US. When it is, it can sometimes be an
exercise in stupidity. 

Free speech does not protect one from the consequences of poor taste,
imbecilic outbursts, or culturally ignorant explosive speech. For
example, If I see a group of latino youths and I shout "your sisters a
whore", its protected free speech. But I must bear the consequences of
having the shit beat out of me for my poor taste.
