I had the niave idea that my philosopher-major Purusha buddies could
at least embrace the idea that I was still a seeker of truth and that
I could talk with them about my new off-the-path path.  But civil
conversation was not possible.  I remember exactly how I felt about
Pat Ryan when I saw him on a course visiting people after he had left
the movement, before I had, so I really had no reason to expect any
different treatment from my friends.  But it was a weird shock to be
viewed as a demon by people I cared about and being unable to say "hey
man its me in here, same guy different ideas about spirituality."

A Thai GF I had years ago showed me how relaxed some Buddhists can be
about people's different beliefs.  She wore a gold Buddha around her
neck and I asked her once if it bothered her that I was not religious
at all.  She said "why would it matter to me what you believe about
God.  That is between you two."  I guess because Buddhism is a
non-evangelical religion it is easier for them to be cool about
different beliefs.
