Actually US theaters have been babysitting palaces for teenagers since
the 1980s or whenever the teen dance hall dried up (due to insurance
problems). That tended to drive away older crowds and is why they try
to draw the older crowds back in during the holidays as it is a good
socializing event. I don't think the studio are quite as concerned as
the theater owners. Teenagers may be staying home more to watch DVDs
these days (and the studios get a revenue cut from that too -- unless
they're watching pirated ones). I've not heard of fear being any
issue. Even when the cops shot to death a crazy patron at the Sony
Metreon in San Francisco a couple years back but it didn't seem to have
any effect on attendance.
It is just mainly folks are fed up with rude crowds at movies. And none
of the theaters have pause buttons. :)
Hollywood thinks that entertainment should not be a crap shoot even
though it has always been a crap shoot. Lately banking on remakes may
not be panning out as well as expected and it may be time to boot out
some of those summa cum laude kids they hired to run stuff. They don't
know the business nor the art.
