Really?  That isn't what Osho suggests.  He claims MMY
could not use "Swami" and called himself "Maharishi" in
an attempt to make up for it.

Makes sense to me.

As I said in another post, the editor of Ramana Maharishi's
"Collected Works" says in his introduction that the title
"Maharshi" (or "Maharishi") is conferred on a teacher who
inaugurates a new spiritual path.  That would make sense
as well in light of what you say, since if it's a new
spiritual path, there wouldn't be any tradition or committee
to confer it.
