Once people understand why these are important, then it makes sense. And it's helpful for people to learn some basics of proper breathing, some basic breath education. This could even ideally be taught to children in a simple, non-sectarian manner. And it should be free.
Tom T: A few years ago my wife and I were mentoring a Toastmaster Club at the Maximim Security Prison in Fort Madison. As part of an educational speech I was giving about how to be a more relaxed speaker, I taught the entire club how to do pranayama. A month later when I went back, one of the inmate members approached me during the break to share his experiences with that technique. He shared that after about 20 minutes the entire wing he was in would get quiet and he felt very settled and relaxed. He also shared that some of the time a great deal of light would come into him and he felt better than he ever did on drugs. I asked him how often he practiced and he allowed that he did 40 minutes a day twice a day. I was impressed and he seemed to be having great experiences in a very stressful place.
